Midterm 1 date and time

Midterm 1 will be held on Oct. 3 from 6-7 pm.

What will the midterm look like?

Content

  • The material covered by Midterm 1 includes material from Chapters 1-5 of LK notes and the corresponding chapters of PD notes. See the Course calendar for detailed readings (up to Sept 30). You should also look over the learning goals for the first four weeks of the course.
  • The best way to study is to do lots of problems. Questions similar to both the WeBWorK assignments and the OSH will appear on the midterm. For example, last year, the Midterm 1 questions were most similar to the following WeBWorK and OSH problems:
    • WeBWorK 2: 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18.
    • WeBWorK 3: 20, 21, 23.
    • WeBWorK 4: 6, 19, 21, 22, 23.
    • OSH 2 (Problem #2).
    • OSH 3 (both problems).
  • Keep in mind that not all topics are covered on any single midterm so a WeBWorK or OSH problem not on this list may very well appear this year even if it didn't appear last year.

Format

The midterm will consist of a number of multiple choice questions, some short answer problems (show work, enter answer in a box) and three longer questions more like OSH. Here is a skeleton midterm with no content, just format. The actual midterm might differ in the details but will look roughly like this.

Midterm 1 room assignments

Section Building and room #
101 (A-Leung) SWNG 221
101 (Li-Z) SWNG 222
102 LSK 200
103 BIOL 2000
104 GEOG 100
105 MATH 100
106 BUCH A101

Booked rooms for 2014 (for both Sept 30 and Nov 4):

CHEM B150 (capacity 265) Could possibly be for Leah Keshet's Section 106 with estimated 132 students x 2 = 264 seating capacity.

CHEM B250 (capacity 240)Section 104: 110 students x 2 = 220 seating capacity.

BUCH A203 (capacity 108) Section 102: 88 students x 2 = 176 seating capacity + portion of HENN 200 classroom seating capacity. i.e. estimated 34 students of Section 102 would write in HENN 200 with Section 101 students.

BUCH A201 (capacity 181) Section 105: 88 students x 2 = 176 seating capacity.

BUCH A103 (capacity 131) BUCH A102 (capacity 150) Section 103: possible 135 students x 2 = 270 seating capacity. These two nearby rooms have 281 combined seating, would handle extra student registration Mark Mac Lean might add to your Section 103.

HENN 200 (capacity 257) HENN 201 (capacity 155) Section 101: 132 students x 2 = 264 seating capacity. Combined seating capacity of 412 in HENN 200 and HENN 201 will cover Section 101 students and approximately 34 Section 102 students mentioned above.

Total capacity: 1487
